Furnace Odors – What’s that Strange Smell?
With the evening temperatures dropping a little these last few nights – many of us are getting ready to flip on our furnaces for the first time. Have you ever wondered what that burning smell was when you first flip the switch?
The smell is likely not cause for concern but it is good to know what the source might be.
The most common reason for the “funny” odor is dust and debris getting burned off the heating unit when it is turned on for the first time. This is very normal and should dissipate after about 30 minutes. If you notice the smell lasting longer, you may have a more serious problem that a certified technician should diagnose.
Another culprit for the smell could be dirty filters. When was the last time you changed your filters, can’t remember…change them. It’s a good idea to change your filters every month to ensure clean, healthy air is flowing through your system.
If you smell a distinct electrical smell this could indicate trouble with your motor or other components.
